Middlesex, NJ: Did you know...?

This 3.5 sq. mile borough is in Middlesex County. It's population is approximately 13,700.

In 1896 a real estate developer names Silas Dewey Drake formed the New Jersey Mutual Realty Company, which in turn purchased two farms from John D. Voorhees.  These farms were sectioned into streets and lots for private homes and industrial buildings.  The first building he erected is now a part of the present-day railway station.  Other developed sections included East Bound Brook, Dewey Park and Beechwood Heights. Many more have since been developed, including Watchung Estates, which was at one time the "Close Farm", famous locally for its orchard of peach and plum trees.  All of these areas were a part of Piscataway township until 1913, when Middlesex was incorporated into a borough.
